Using a facemask during anaesthesia

چکیده
Anna Negus Anaesthetic Fellow Starship Hospital Grafton Auckland New Zealand INTRODUCTION The facemask has been used since the origins of anaesthesia and it remains an essential and versatile piece of equipment. It offers a simple, non-invasive method for delivering both oxygen and anaesthetic gases and vapours to the patient and it is widely used for both induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia. It is an effective way to ventilate the unconscious patient and therefore also has a major role during resuscitation. Every anaesthetist should be confident in using this piece of equipment.1

A randomised controlled trial comparing transnasal humidified rapid insufflation ventilatory exchange (THRIVE) pre-oxygenation with facemask pre-oxygenation in patients undergoing rapid sequence induction of anaesthesia.
Pre-oxygenation is an essential part of rapid sequence induction of general anaesthesia for emergency surgery, in order to increase the oxygen reservoir in the lungs. We performed a randomised controlled trial of transnasal humidified rapid insufflation ventilatory exchange (THRIVE) pre-oxygenation or facemask pre-oxygenation in patients undergoing emergency surgery. Twenty patients were alloca...
متن کاملDifficult mask ventilation: does it matter?
We discuss the relevance of finding a patient's lungs difficult to ventilate by facemask during the course of anaesthetic induction. In particular, we discuss the issue of whether it is advisable or unnecessary to check the ability to ventilate by facemask before administering a neuromuscular blocking agent. In the light of advances in supraglottic airway technology it has become possible to in...
متن کاملConfirmation of the ability to ventilate by facemask before administration of neuromuscular blocker: a non-instrumental piece of information?
BACKGROUND Our aim was to determine whether anaesthetists routinely confirm their ability to ventilate a patient's lungs by a facemask before the administration of a neuromuscular blocker and the rationale for this practice. METHODS An online survey of trainee and non-trainee anaesthetists working in hospitals forming part of the Central London School of Anaesthesia collected 136 complete dat...

perform bag mask ventilation on a daily basis, prior to laryngeal mask airway (LMA) insertion and tracheal intubation? It is a common criticism that (over)use of the LMA means trainees perform less intubations and I welcome the recommendation that trainees should be preferentially attached to lists where facemask anaesthesia and intubations occur. Trainees moving between theatres will also incr...
متن کاملEmergency airway management by non-anaesthesia house officers--a comparison of three strategies.
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine effects of different airway devices and tidal volumes on lung ventilation and gastric inflation in an unprotected airway. METHODS Thirty one non-anaesthesia house officers volunteered for the study, and ventilated a bench model simulating an unintubated respiratory arrest patient with bag-valve-facemask, laryngeal mask airway, and combitub...
